How to Become Smarter List Price: |
DescriptionThis book describes techniques for improving mental abilities. Some of the things it can help you to achieve include the following: Depending on circumstances, use different lifestyles that improve one or another mental function.Experience euphoria without drugs and come up with new ideas, when needed.Slow down and prevent yourself from making rash, impulsive decisions, when necessary.Sharpen your wit, become more talkative, and entertain people. When necessary, lower your mood and increase emotional tension, which can reduce procrastination.Increase your score on intelligence or general aptitude tests.Concentrate on reading and writing for many hours daily.Increase your grade point average if you are a student or improve your job productivity if you are a knowledge worker.Get along with people and live without arguments and conflicts. The proposed methods are brief cooling or heating of the body (water thera- py) and three different "smart diets," each suitable for a different type of task. The text also describes a "depressant diet," which is not a smart diet but can im- prove self-control and sleep. Readers don't need to use the strict diets on a per- manent basis and the book recommends the conventional food pyramid most of the time. The text also discusses several useful social skills and studying/writing techniques as well as the role of luck in personal achievement. Most authors in this field will tell you that you should read more books, solve mental puzzles, buy their nutritional supplements, sleep well, and exercise in or- der to get smarter. In contrast, this book is proposing moderately cold hydrother- apy and a smart diet (which involves avoiding all dietary supplements). To give another example, most books on anger management say that you should try to change your thinking in order to overcome anger, while this book suggests hot hydrotherapy and the exclusion of certain foods from your diet. The main focus of discussion in this text is on changing the biological workings of the brain, not on pop psychology. In particular, the book describes various combinations of diets and hydrotherapy that have the following effects: sedative/sleep-promoting, stimulant/wakefulness-promoting, attention-enhancing, antianxiety, antidepres- sant, mood-stabilizing (mood-lowering), and euphoriant. In addition, the book presents existing scientific evidence of pain-reducing, fever-reducing, anti- fatigue, immunostimulatory, antinausea, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory effects of hydrotherapy. The text also discusses the possible side effects of the diets and hydrotherapy. Despite its technical content, the book is written in an accessible language and has an informative summary for each chapter and a list of key points at the end of each section. The book supports most of the claims in the bulleted list above with a theory and the author's personal experience (a healthy subject). Previously published scientific studies directly support about a half of these claims, including the claim about intelligence tests. The author's academic transcripts and test scores have been documented and can be verified independently. |

A Short Guide to a Happy Life List Price: Sale Price: $3.80 You save: $9.15 (71%) |
Description"Life is made of moments, small pieces of silver amidst long stretches of tedium. It would be wonderful if they came to us unsummoned, but particularly in lives as busy as the ones most of us lead now, that won't happen. We have to teach ourselves now to live, really live...to love the journey, not the destination."In this treasure of a book, Anna Quindlen, the bestselling novelist and columnist, reflects on what it takes to "get a life"—to live deeply every day and from your own unique self, rather than merely to exist through your days. "Knowledge of our own mortality is the greatest gift God ever gives us," Quindlen writes, "because unless you know the clock is ticking, it is so easy to waste our days, our lives." Her mother died when Quindlen was nineteen: "It was the dividing line between seeing the world in black and white, and in Technicolor. The lights came on for the darkest possible reason....I learned something enduring, in a very short period of time, about life. And that was that it was glorious, and that you had no business taking it for granted." But how to live from that perspective, to fully engage in our days? In A Short Guide to a Happy Life, Quindlen guides us with an understanding that comes from knowing how to see the view, the richness in living. "I'm not particularly qualified by profession or education to give advice and counsel," confesses author Anna Quindlen, as she begins this tender little instruction book. "It's widely known in a small circle that I make a mean tomato sauce, and I know many inventive ways to hold a baby while nursing, although I haven't had the opportunity to use any of them in years." It is precisely this commonplace form of wisdom that make readers trust and respect Quindlen. She uses her candid, heart-to-heart narrative voice along with her novel-writer descriptive skills to show readers how good we have it: "Life is made up of moments, small pieces of mica in a long stretch of glittering gray cement." Later she urges readers to "Look at the fuzz on a baby's ear. Read in the backyard with the sun on your face." The format smacks of "gift book," with an abundance of pleasing, artsy photographs. Don't be ashamed to fall for the packaging, though. This is one of those books that could remain in the living room for years or in the family for generations. --Gail Hudson |

Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating List Price: Sale Price: $6.22 You save: $9.77 (61%) |
DescriptionThis updated edition of the national bestseller debunks dietary myths and presents Dr. Willett's New Healthy Eating Pyramid, a healthier guide to nutrition than the recently revised USDA pyramid. Inside you'll discover: eye-opening new research on the healthiest carbohydrates, fats, and proteins why weight control is still the single most important factor menu plans and brand-new recipes that make it even easier to reinvent your diet Aimed at nothing less than totally restructuring the diets of Americans, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy may well accomplish its goal. Dr. Walter C. Willett gets off to a roaring start by totally dismantling one of the largest icons in health today: the USDA Food Pyramid that we all learn in elementary school. He blames many of the pyramid's recommendations--6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates, all fats used sparingly--for much of the current wave of obesity. At first this may read differently than any diet book, but Willett also makes a crucial, rarely mentioned point about this icon: "The thing to keep in mind about the USDA Pyramid is that it comes from the Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for promoting American agriculture, not from the agencies established to monitor and protect our health." It's no wonder that dairy products and American-grown grains such as wheat and corn figure so prominently in the USDA's recommendations. Willett's own simple pyramid has several benefits over the traditional format. His information is up-to-date, and you won't find recommendations that come from special-interest groups. His ideas are nothing radical--if we eat more vegetables and complex carbohydrates (no, potatoes are not complex), emphasize healthy fats, and enjoy small amounts of a tremendous variety of food, we will be healthier. You'll find some surprises as well, such as doubts about the overall benefits of soy (unless you're willing to eat a pound and a half of tofu a day), and that nuts, with their "good" fat content, are a terrific snack. Relying on research rather than anecdotes, this is a solidly written nutritional guide that will show you the real story behind how food is digested, from the glycemic index for carbs to the wisdom of adding a multivitamin to your diet. Willett combines research with matter-of-fact language and a no-nonsense tone that turns academic studies into easily understandable suggestions for living. --Jill Lightner |

AT&T 4G Network What is 4G? 4G is a wireless technology term meaning "Fourth Generation." 4G follows 3G as the latest addition to AT&T's mobile broadband network. When combined with enhanced backhaul, 4G means faster speeds, where data transfers take less time to complete. AT&T has upgraded the software of its nationwide mobile broadband network with HSPA+ which, with enhanced backhaul, enables speeds up to 4x faster than AT&T's already fast mobile broadband speeds. And now, AT&T is evolving to even faster 4G speeds with the launch of AT&T's 4G LTE technology in select markets. Backhaul is one of the major pieces of a telecommunications network. Think of it as the limbs connecting AT&T's cell towers with AT&T's backbone network that provides access to the Internet. How does AT&T 4G differ from other 4G networks? AT&T is the only network offering two layers of 4G technology: HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul and LTE, both capable of delivering 4G speeds. Customers will have access to fast speeds as they move in and out of 4G LTE areas. Customers of competitors who do not have HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul are likely to see a steep drop-off in speeds when they move out of LTE areas. In areas where either AT&T's 3G or 4G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Optional AT&T Services AT&T Navigator: This premium GPS navigation application includes audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates and re-routing options, and 3D moving maps (additional charges applicable). AT&T Navigator offers several other features to make your commute more enjoyable and reliable, including mobile access to Yellowpages.com. Hop Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy+UltraViolet) List Price: Sale Price: $9.99 You save: $29.99 (75%) |
DescriptionFrom the makers of Despicable Me comes a comedy about candy, chicks and rock 'n' roll! He was destined to be the Easter Bunny, but all he wanted to do was rock! When teenage E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand) leaves for Hollywood in pursuit of his dream to become a rockstar drummer, he meets Fred (James Marsden), an out-of-work slacker with his own lofty goals. Together the two encounter a series of hilarious mishaps and misadventures and in the end help each other recognize the importance of family. "The laughs don't stop in this movie treat for all ages!" - Pete Hammond, Boxoffice. Hop is all about achieving one's dreams, regardless of how fantastical those dreams may seem. Hidden deep inside the mouth of a moai statue on Easter Island is a candy factory that produces the world's Easter candy and looks like a cross between Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and Santa's Workshop. The Easter Bunny and a very bossy chick foreman named Carlos take their responsibility to make Easter happen very seriously. But the Easter Bunny's son E.B. dreams not of taking his rightful place as the next Easter Bunny, but of becoming a famous drummer--a situation that his father finds highly disappointing. In the human world, Fred O'Hare is also a disappointment to his father; he's a young man who can't seem to find a job that he's passionate about--indeed, he's a slacker who can't seem to find any job at all. E.B. and Fred meet on the streets of Hollywood and become unlikely roommates in a borrowed mansion. As the two struggle to find and pursue their dreams, hilarity ensues and each character learns a surprising lesson from the other. Hop is full of comic moments that include a bunny that poops jellybeans, chicks that shout through "eggaphones," and an elite bunny force known as the "pink berets." The premise of the story is a lot like director Tim Hill's earlier Alvin and the Chipmunks films--a man without direction finds his purpose through an unlikely relationship with a cute talking animal after enduring lots of big messes and plenty of silly slapstick humor. The main difference is that in this film, energetic drum solos replace the high-pitched, sped-up singing of little chipmunks. The combined animation and live action is deftly handled by Chris Meledandri's Illumination (Despicable Me). Hop is a film full of silly antics and some good chuckles--it's not deep, but kids ages 7 and older, as well as adults, should enjoy it. --Tami Horiuchi |

The Collected Poems of W.B. Yeats List Price: Sale Price: $9.27 You save: $10.73 (54%) |
DescriptionThe Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats includes all of the poems authorized by Yeats for inclusion in his standard canon. Breathtaking in range, it encompasses the entire arc of his career, from luminous reworkings of ancient Irish myths and legends to passionate meditations on the demands and rewards of youth and old age, from exquisite, occasionally whimsical songs of love, nature, and art to somber and angry poems of life in a nation torn by war and uprising. In observing the development of rich and recurring images and themes over the course of his body of work, we can trace the quest of this century's greatest poet to unite intellect and artistry in a single magnificent vision. Revised and corrected, this edition includes Yeats's own notes on his poetry, complemented by explanatory notes from esteemed Yeats scholar Richard J. Finneran. The Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats is the most comprehensive edition of one of the world's most beloved poets available in paperback. William Butler Yeats, whom many consider this century's greatest poet, began as a bard of the Celtic Twilight, reviving legends and Rosicrucian symbols. By the early 1900s, however, he was moving away from plush romanticism, his verse morphing from the incantatory rhythms of "I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree" into lyrics "as cold and passionate as the dawn." At every stage, however, Yeats plays a multiplicity of poetic roles. There is the romantic lover of "When You Are Old" and "A Poet to His Beloved" ("I bring you with reverent Hands / The books of my numberless dreams..."). And there are the far more bitter celebrations of Maud Gonne, who never accepted his love and engaged in too much politicking for his taste: "Why should I blame her that she filled my days / With misery, or that she would of late / Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways, / Or hurled the little streets upon the great, / Had they but courage equal to desire?" There is also the poet of conscience--and confrontation. His 1931 "Remorse for Intemperate Speech" ends: "Out of Ireland have we come. / Great hatred, little room, / Maimed us at the start. / I carried from my mother's womb / A fanatic heart." Yeats was to explore several more sides of himself, and of Ireland, before his Last Poems of 1938-39. Many are difficult, some snobbish, others occult and spiritualist. As Brendan Kennelly writes, Yeats "produces both poppycock and sublimity in verse, sometimes closely together." On the other hand, many prophetic masterworks are poppycock-free--for example, "The Second Coming" ("Turning and turning in the widening gyre / The falcon cannot hear the falconer; / Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; / Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world...") and such inquiries into inspiration as "Among School Children" ("O body swayed to music, O brightening glance, How can we know the dancer from the dance?"). And at his best, Yeats extends the meaning of love poetry beyond the obviously romantic: love becomes a revolutionary emotion, attaching the poet to friends, history, and the passionate life of the mind. --Kerry Fried Features
