How to Become Smarter List Price: |
DescriptionThis book describes techniques for improving mental abilities. Some of the things it can help you to achieve include the following: Depending on circumstances, use different lifestyles that improve one or another mental function.Experience euphoria without drugs and come up with new ideas, when needed.Slow down and prevent yourself from making rash, impulsive decisions, when necessary.Sharpen your wit, become more talkative, and entertain people. When necessary, lower your mood and increase emotional tension, which can reduce procrastination.Increase your score on intelligence or general aptitude tests.Concentrate on reading and writing for many hours daily.Increase your grade point average if you are a student or improve your job productivity if you are a knowledge worker.Get along with people and live without arguments and conflicts. The proposed methods are brief cooling or heating of the body (water thera- py) and three different "smart diets," each suitable for a different type of task. The text also describes a "depressant diet," which is not a smart diet but can im- prove self-control and sleep. Readers don't need to use the strict diets on a per- manent basis and the book recommends the conventional food pyramid most of the time. The text also discusses several useful social skills and studying/writing techniques as well as the role of luck in personal achievement. Most authors in this field will tell you that you should read more books, solve mental puzzles, buy their nutritional supplements, sleep well, and exercise in or- der to get smarter. In contrast, this book is proposing moderately cold hydrother- apy and a smart diet (which involves avoiding all dietary supplements). To give another example, most books on anger management say that you should try to change your thinking in order to overcome anger, while this book suggests hot hydrotherapy and the exclusion of certain foods from your diet. The main focus of discussion in this text is on changing the biological workings of the brain, not on pop psychology. In particular, the book describes various combinations of diets and hydrotherapy that have the following effects: sedative/sleep-promoting, stimulant/wakefulness-promoting, attention-enhancing, antianxiety, antidepres- sant, mood-stabilizing (mood-lowering), and euphoriant. In addition, the book presents existing scientific evidence of pain-reducing, fever-reducing, anti- fatigue, immunostimulatory, antinausea, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory effects of hydrotherapy. The text also discusses the possible side effects of the diets and hydrotherapy. Despite its technical content, the book is written in an accessible language and has an informative summary for each chapter and a list of key points at the end of each section. The book supports most of the claims in the bulleted list above with a theory and the author's personal experience (a healthy subject). Previously published scientific studies directly support about a half of these claims, including the claim about intelligence tests. The author's academic transcripts and test scores have been documented and can be verified independently. |

Madea's Big Happy Family: The Play List Price: Sale Price: $4.65 You save: $10.33 (69%) |
DescriptionShirley has important news for her family, but she has five grown children with different lifestyles and finds it difficult to get them and the kids all together. So in steps Madea, the Matriarch General, to put the family's life in perspective with a hilarious twist on financial difficulties, drugs and, most important, family secrets. The next generation has a lot to learn. In her own way, Madea expresses how deliverance won’t change you to be someone else, but will allow you to be who you really are. Ain’t nothing like family! Tyler Perry, juggling top-rated sitcoms and films that bear his name above the title (not to mention projects such as Precious to which he lends his considerable clout to get made), is the newest hardest-working man in show business. Somehow in 2010 he found time to write, direct, and star in this heartfelt theatrical project--his first in five years--inspired by his late mother and featuring his signature character Madea. He did 125 shows in 126 days. Exhaustion forced him to cancel the remainder of the tour, but the cameras were rolling for this enthusiastically received rafter-rattling performance. Big Happy Family delivers everything to be expected from a Perry play: bruising family dysfunction, physical comedy, soul-stirring gospel uplift, and Oprah-style empowerment. Chandra Currelley-Young stars as Shirley, who learns she is dying of cancer. She tries to tell her family, but they are too wrapped up in their own melodramas to pay her any mind. There's the son who turns to selling drugs to keep his gold-digging girlfriend, the daughter who is unlucky in love, and another daughter too involved in her career. Weighing in on the sidelines is Madea, who, about 90 minutes in, stops the show to go "off-script" to weigh in on marriage, manhood, and even the housing crisis. Big Happy Family is broadly written and acted, the character types way beyond stereo. But Perry's positive populist messages about family, self-respect, and keeping the faith hit home with his appreciative audience. Perry has joked in interviews about wanting to kill off Madea, but like Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner before him, he seems to have made peace with the character that put him on the map. During the emotional curtain call, he tells the crowd that his mother told him, "Don't stop doing Madea… I'll keep doing it as long as you want to keep seeing it." That could be awhile. --Donald Liebenson |

Under My Skin List Price: Sale Price: $4.99 You save: $3.00 (38%) |
DescriptionCD AUDIO SIDE: Entire Album DVD SIDE: * Entire album in enhanced LPCM Stereo * Music Video for #1 single "My Happy Ending" and "Nobody’s Home" * Behind the scenes footage * Photo Gallery This disc is intended to play on standard DVD and CD players. May not play on a limited number of models. With her breakthrough 2002 debut, Let Go, Avril Lavigne tried to market herself as the bona fide alternative to tarty teen queens, Britney and Christina. Her guitar-pop hits were irresistibly bratty but the whole "Complicated" teen pose was a little hard to swallow, especially since two songwriters called the Matrix--who had at least twenty years on the Canadian singer--fed her most of the material. Having had the chance to live a little, Lavigne returns to make good on her angsty image with Under My Skin, an album rippling with delightfully dour melodies and heartfelt lyrics about loneliness ("How Does It Feel") and fractured relationships ("Don't Tell Me"). Is it clichéd? Sure. Will it scare off her necktie and t-shirt wearing fans? Possibly. But there's nothing quite as satisfying as watching a teen-pop icon actually reveal her soul. --Jaan Uhelszki Features

Music, why people focus on the negative or not.
I love songs with upbeat tempos and positive lyrics happiness ... It's funny that the day listening to another person. Grace, Silverstein, Papa Roach and all groups who complain how their life is not always called, and my love of music shallow concrete I think it's actually pretty funny. Listen to music, it defines me not as a person. Do not get me wrong, I listen to music, depression, sometimes when I'm not feeling too good. But I do not listen to all time. But why do you like music with lots of angry shouting and negative energy.
This is negative, but not angry. http://www.youtube.com/user/LilWaynesTheBestEver # P/f/79/vuyEgvCVYd8.
The music I found that depressed people make you think. ... Think about life, death, love, itself is something like that. Of course, we all love "the shadows happy" or "object. - La - Di, Ob - La - Da" from time to time. Sad sad song but more often tend to be the best. I do not like music with screaming noise "or negative". Do I can not stand. But punk such as King Crimson and Jethro Tull has always been what I think is different from that generally very happy "music." Unfortunately, some http:/ songs I like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bVKH28LhRk / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7-EEGiABBU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duYW2UxfR5Q&feature=related . www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwqX1h5Vr2U&feature=fvw. http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0dUhYc0sic see? It's not bad, even if it is negative. I have a dystopian vision of the world and I think the nihilistic. Often, these songs get me.

Writing about music
Igor Stravinsky claimed that music is beyond verbal description. But is it? While there may be a gap between the emotional experience of the beat, rhythm and cadence of music and capturing it in words, writers use metaphor, allegory and storytelling to do so. Writers like our three guests today, Anna Goldsworthy, Eric Siblin and Robert Forster, have been able to bridge the gap.
